Grace

When we first met Grace, she was very timid and always kept her distance from us, even at feeding times. When she gave birth, it was at the furthest reaches of our land, under some fallen branches. She had had twins but  she had been so busy cleaning Sheila, that she had not licked the membrane from the face of little Star who was sadly dead when we found them. We picked up Sheila and encouraged Grace to follow us back to the stables and safety but Grace kept running back, clearly knowing she had another lamb back there. But Sheila's tiny bleating eventually drew Grace to follow us and we put mother and baby in the stable.

We began a "dining club" after realising that some of the older sheep, instigated by Lola, had very poor teeth, or none at all and, unable to graze, were losing weight. Grace began by looking through the stable gate at the lucky girls getting fed and eventually we were able to coax her in to join them. Soon after, Grace realised we meant her no harm and very gradually, we got her to understand how nice a stroke from us was.

She gradually became more & more trusting and would gladly allow us to cuddle & kiss her beautiful face.

Sadly just before christmas 2020, we had to say goodbye to Grace. She slipped & broke her leg - and as she was so old and arthritic, she couldn't have had it splinted. It was an awful time and the rest of the flock, especially Shewee her daughter, spent days on edge, looking for her.

Grace lives on in Shewee/Sheila, who still misses her mum, as we do, but is as vocal & greedy as her mum was.

R.I.P. darling Grace
